Why? It has nothing to do

Why? It has nothing to do with how close and easier it is to get somewhere, but more to do with the legalities. Contests, especially a professional contest - needs to have contracts...legal contracts. A person has to be a legal resident (even if you are not an American)...I'm thinking if you have a Visa to live and work in America, you are a legal resident...and therefore can apply to many contests sponsored through the US legalities.

Vancouver is in Canada, by the way

actually

Legal residence and working visas aren't the same thing at all. In most cases, an immigrant has to live, work, pay taxes, etc, for several years before they can apply for permanent residence. I've been living abroad for the past five years. I'm well aware of how it works. (Usually to immigrants' disadvantage) And of course i know Vancouver is in Canada. That's why I said I didn't understand why Canadian residents weren't eligible. The editor already explained why they had limitations, so now our questions have been answered and there's no reason to continue discussing it.

About the rules...

Thanks for asking, Boris. And to everyone outside of the US who would like to participate in the contest - unfortunately, contest rules and regulations are trickier than we'd like. There are state laws and then federal laws and then international laws on top of that. To make this contest open legally to international participation is not something we can accommodate at this time, but certainly our aim for future contests on the site.

We're sorry - we wish it could be different and appreciate everyone's participation and interaction here on OurChart and hope you'll continue to hang out for all the other good stuff we have coming up.

Lisa everytime you post a

Lisa everytime you post a contest with the rules people out of the USA complain about the same thing.Wouldn't it be a good idea to just include an explaination like this one in a link on the contest notification.

It would spare some of us from having to read all the whining ,again.

The law is the law folks.Gay folks aren't exempt from following or adhering to it.

**On second thought how about just scrap contest all together? That would eliminate lots of alot.

An Idea

Lisa,

I think it would be good idea for Showtime to partner with the "Make a Wish Foundation" or a similar organization and offer a free trip to the L-word premiere to meet the cast to a terminally ill young person or something. This project is a very nice offer to an elite few, but it could be so much more.

Good idea

That's a lovely idea. But they also could do both, since the winner of this contest will pay for her expenses.

How about if I'm studying in

How about if I'm studying in the US at that time? I may not be a permanent resident but i will be living there for a year! Come on there should be some rule that includes people from other countries who are temporarily in the States!
:(

Please do try and make this

Please do try and make this actually an international site. Holding a contest for a TV show made in Canada, with the prize located in Canada, that Canadians cannot enter is quite a slap in the face.

Well actually.....

The L Word is an American show, that has been shot in Canada. It has been shot there, like so many other American productions, because production costs are cheaper. Canada offers tax credits and financial incentives to the production Companies. Not because anyone wants to shoot there. I work in television production, this I know to be a fact.

It's all about the cash..... that is a "slap in the face", as you call it, to all of the Americans that work in TV and Film Production here in the states. Thousands here have lost jobs and their families have been financially devastated because of "runaway" productions. ( That is the term used in the industry)

So actually, Producing the L Word in Canada, is "a slap in the face" to American working families.

So... if an American is going to get a cheesy "walk on" role..... maybe it should be someone in the "industry" who lost a job, because the L Word has been shot in Canada.

Out sourcing of American television and films in Canada, it's a disgrace. :(

Just think

about all the Canadians that have a job thanks to these productions.

Outsourcing is NOT a disgrace. Vancouver and New Zealand, as well as some other foreign countries have access to more locations, easier access and this is very helpful to creating a best possible show or movie. That's what I support - i support the ART, not the American economy or Canadian or whatever, I support the art.

I am also in the industry, not the American I admit, but I have many friends who are in the American Industry - and it's a much about the art as it is about bang for buck - so I disagree with you here. I personally would rather the best possible production being made in China, then something kinda okay stapled together in LA.

Not to mention that the

Not to mention that the diversity of it, encourages new creativity and pushes the art even higher :)

That reminds of this song

Just to let you know BLAME CANADA is my fav Phrase!

Love that song! South park! yes!

------------
"Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow. Don't walk behind me, I may not lead. There is only one happiness in life, to love and be loved. "

-George Sand

Ahh yes...

That song reminds me of how Canada is the typical scapegoat for all that is wrong and unjust...blah, blah, blah...*YAWN*
It would be great if one day someone would surprise me with some frakkin originality already!! BTW-that's a reference to yet another show that is filmed here in case anybody didn't know.

Speaking of unoriginal - would anybody care for some cheese with their whine? It's on me.

No disrepect to Canada intended

Foxy, the only reason I posted the link is because that song makes me laugh. It is meant to be sarcastic because in the song people are blaming Canada instead of society or ourselves for the way children are behaving.

One of my best friends is Canadian, by the way. I have affection for Canada. Especially the beer store.

Thanks for clarifying

Minnie! I occasionally watch Southpark so I'm aware that THEY make fun of everybody and THEY are completely sarcastic. However, TOO often I see people actually latching onto and believing the concept.

Mmmm...beer...beer stores... ;)

Foxy, I refer to the country

Foxy, I refer to the country as "Canadia" out of sheer, teasing jealousy at everything but the weather.

Well now...

editor

Although now that I can

Although now that I can legally get married in my state that's one more strike back in our favor.  ;)

Ooh, and my state makes my favorite cheese.

LMAO.....

That's pretty funny. :) Unfortunately the impact on American lives hasn't seen so humorous. Runaway productions have effected all of us. All major cities that used to "host" TV and Film Productions have been economically devastated.

Here's an example of the impact TV and Film Productions can have on a community...... during the recent writers strike.... Los Angeles alone lost an estimated 1.5 BILLION dollars over 11 weeks. That is a conservative estimate. That's a lot of jobs, and families effected.

Well considering how much

Well considering how much entertainment demands to work - in LA, if one has a budget to be in - it's either cut corners with props and special effects...or, location location location...

Location can make or break.

I love how M. Night Shyamalan works in the Pennsylvania (mainly the south east) region.

Maybe if production costs were cheaper in LA, and it wasn't so advanced (and demanding so much) - more production would be done. But the way I look at it - I think it's good to have entertainment being done outside of LA (and in Vancouver or wherever). I think it's balancing...and keeping a reign on LA's production. I wouldn't want LA to monopolize the entertainment industry.

There's some production being done down in San Diego, at Segall's Studio - but the lot is only so big, and those that work there...can work not only there but up in LA too...and the pricing is still reletivaly the same, in terms of crew...and even location/lot fees.

Vancouver has become HUGE as being a production city (little LA). Eventually - it will be just as expensive, and just as demanding.

NEW! OurChart Photo Assignment and My Blog

Sorry Rover........

This is one that you obviously just do not understand. You don't have a clue what I do, who I am , or which major Television and Film Studio I have worked with for decades. I am speaking from experience and solid knowledge.

Let me just say this, you can give all of the advice you like around here about love, sex, diversity and whatever. But, when it comes to this issue....you just don't understand how it works. There are so many factors involved in TV&Film Production, it is no simple task. It's not about cheap crews and "keeping a reign on LA's production". Speak to any member of the Directors Guild,Producers Guild,Writers Guild,SAG and AFTRA, I.A.T.S.E. and any craft members. Talent and experience are priority one.

You know nothing about this issue. Please don't assume you do.

Why do you feel the need to

Why do you feel the need to attack and call people out? This is a site about sharing your thoughts and opinions about situations. If you wanna have a war of words, go to a damn chat room! I don't always agree with Rover, but respect her opinion because its her beliefs! Mature people agree to disagree and see various view points. Difference of opinion is a good thing, if we all agreed on everything all the time, we would be bees in the hive!! Be passionate about your convictions, but understand they are yours, and everyone is entit
led to the same respect!

It don't matter what you do

It don't matter what you do - or who you are. You want to brag so much about how much you know - show your fucking face...and put your name where your mouth is! And just because I don't claim to be in the "biz", doesn't mean I don't know anything. I can talk to long term SAG members. My step dad is one. He's been a member since the 70's

and by the way...if talent and experience is priority number one, and I have no doubt it is, then LA has been lagging in terms of talent, if production has been flocking away from the city. But like you've said...it's about money!

Show My Fucking Face ???

Excuse me Miss " I own Our Chart, Rover Mommy "

"It don't matter what you do - or who you are. You want to brag so much about how much you know - show your fucking face...and put your name where your mouth is!"

WOW....... Why are you so immature?? And angry ?? I'm making a statement. I speak from experience.... are you?? Were you a bully in school, or just a nagging know-it all. Brag? Since when is solid knowledge considered bragging? I know that you can't , personally stand me, but every once in a while.... someone else just may have some knowledge that you don't have.

By your response, you have shown that you know nothing about Television or Film Production. It is tax breaks and and incentives offered by Canada, and even some States here, that drive Production out of town. Nothing else but that. Period. No one shoots in Canada because they can't wait to uproot all of the actors and actresses, and move them out of the country and away from their families for 6 months simply because it's a wonderful place to work. It HAS been cheaper. PERIOD. With what's happening to our economy here in the states, at this point, the tide will be turning soon. Canada will not be as attractive.

Canada has union crews that make great money. The tax breaks, make the bottom line acceptable. Canada has the best crews outside of the U.S.. Hard working union women and men. A great majority, trained right here in the U.S.. This is a fact. This is not up for debate. The majority of companies that provide everything from lighting, camera and camera support equipment to costumes and scenic.... American Corporations...... doing business in Canada.

And your step-father. God Bless him.If he has made a living, as an active member of SAG, then he knows just how deeply "runaway" productions have effected the majority of SAG and AFTRA members. I don't know his own personal situation, so I would not presume to say. SAG and AFTRA members are contemplating a strike right now.The AMPTP ( Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) are once again, trying to hurt those who have helped to make THEM so powerful. Greed is a decease that rules most, if not all, major corporations, and the TV and Film industry is comprised of hundreds, if not thousands, of corporations.

And, in this situation Rover...... it DOES matter who I am and what I do. And, would I ever share that with you? You must be kidding. I remember bullies in school, I felt sorry for their lack of self esteem way back then...... and well, I think that you know where I'm going with this.

Take a breath. Life is way to short.

Cheaper isn't the only

reason productions move, there has to be the talent there for it too. There are s LOT of very talented Canadian Crews - can we give them a shout out here.

Not all the Talent in the industry are American, but the only reason people converge on America to crew or act is simply because the money is in that area - not for any other reason.

So if the talent follows the money and jobs, why should the suits follow where production is cheaper with fantastic crews?

'Cause if you are looking for American Productions to only be filmed in America - do you want the talent both in front and behind to be American too? 'Cause you can kiss goodbye to a lot of cast an crew...

Hey thanks for the shoutout DEEAN! Back atcha!

Even though I'm not submerged in the industry, several of my clients, associates and friends are.

I've actually had some interesting discussions with various cast and crew members (from a variety of productions) about how much they enjoy working with the extremely talented people here, how happy they are to get out of California, etc, etc...So if anyone is under the impression that they would ALL rather stay there, they are mistaken.

http://www.ourchart.com/blogs/true-colors-vancouver

by the way - I'm not going to read your comment

it's just a pissing contest...

Like you had stated before I had commented on this subject, it's cheaper to film in Vancouver. Given that, I added that production in the Southern California area demands more money...IE - lot costs, on location costs, subcontractors (pyrotechnics, lighting - basically all the people who get contracted to help make the show...including local enforcement and local fees for permission, and equipment rental) cost; they (costs) all add up. But you insinuated to think that I was strictly talking about the cost of actors or writers. Or at least why else would you try to discredit me so harshly...

I really must have hit a thorn when I said that.

And if you want to discredit me, the way you did, by throwing your professional creditability around like that...at least put your name where your mouth is! - and not hide.

I personally think that if you want to cry so hard about families losing jobs, due to outsourcing - look at the reason...you said it was costs - and I agree...but atleast admit that you and everyone who demands so much from the business (and you have the right to)...is part of the equation of outsourcing...just like consumers (myself included), is also part of that equation, because there is no way that LA could handle 100% of the filming...because we, the consumers, demand a lot of entertainment.

There is a budget to go by, and location (if applicable) is dispensable. And just like I said, eventually Vancouver will be just as expensive and just as demanding. Production won't be able to cut costs, and fit into budget, by filming in Vancouver.

Rovermom is on a mission to piss off as many people as possible I think.
I'm just sayin'.....

Rover mommy

Ya know... That is the only thing she is good at; PISSING people off.
She talks about things she knows nothing about and tries to impress you with using the F WORD to get her point across. You can tell she is highly educated. NOT!

Longbeach thanks for the information you presented. Very insightful.

Hey CrabQ.. You speak the truth. Too bad Rover mommy does not.

I guess with the OC it is pay as you go.

Take care,be safe

That's right. I piss people

That's right.

Thanks for the 2 thumbs up Rover mommy.

You're so sexy when you're just sayin. *sigh*

Tax breaks

Yeah, some states are giving better tax breaks than others. Minnesota did pretty well in the 1990s with having some films made here, and a few in this decade, such as North Country, and Prairie Home Companion.

But, now Wisconsin has made a move to become more competitive by offering better tax breaks and so Minnesota has started to lose out. Dang, those cheeseheads (just kidding, I love to visit Wisconsin).

LBDL. This is typical of Rovermom. She's sweet as all get out when someone compliments her 'ass kissing' and a rabid dog when someone dares question her knowledge of a subject. Guaranteed, when she gets home from work and reads your post, she'll be on the rampage. I love a good girlfight!

Now, now...

Is it REALLY necessary to point fingers at people? After all you have just described about a half dozen individuals on this site.

A RABID DOG...

ha,ha,ha...now that's funny!
or maybe not.
Hey LongBeach...I'll be there in 10...I'm taking you for some precautionary shots before tonight!!!
;D

You've got some good points Rovermom!

For the record, a lot of productions actually prefer shooting in "Hollywood North" and being out of LA. The bitter people (especially those spear-headed by Arnold) will tell you otherwise though...

Good point Conlite!

Thanks! Busyness stopped me

Thanks! Busyness stopped me checking in for a week and look what happens! Had no idea my little comment would stir up such acrimony.
I have no ambition to destroy the LA movie business or whatever. Like most everyone else, I just want the chance to go to the L Word set and meet hot L Word stars! Since it is practically in my own back yard, I could even afford the gas to get there....
Technically I think the legal terms and conditions for the whole OC site limit it to Americans only. The editors seem to operate some sort of sensible "don't ask, don't tell" policy on that front though. Its just a little sad for international users when the whole site ethic is supposed to be about non-discrimination. I love this site and just wish to feel included - but nobody ever said life was fair!
Peace to all.

NO FAIR Eh!!!

Find the silver lining...

bu..bu..but you were a part of the team that won at Dinah Shore. I think you can do more then be a latte drinker.
