Book Review: Kushiel’s Mercy

Good speculative fiction reimagines our world in ways that quicken the mind and whet the imagination. Great speculative fiction throws in a gasp-inducing plotline and characters you can’t help but love. Jacqueline Carey writes great speculative fiction. Her latest work, Kushiel’s Mercy, is no exception.

Prince Imriel de la Courcel has grown to manhood in the shadow of his mother’s treachery against the realm. When he loses his heart to the Queen’s heir, their love, smacking of high treason, tests the most sacred law of Terre d’Ange: Love as thou wilt. Promised absolution for sins which are not his own and leave to marry the woman he loves, Imriel is charged first with proving himself by an act of loyalty which bears dire personal consequences. Poised on the edge of his adventure, unseen dangers send the world spinning topsy-turvy, and Imriel must find a way to save his beloved and all those he loves, not only from this new threat, but from themselves. Packing some of the best plot twists I’ve seen in years, this book sent me into multiple spasms of booknerd glee — so to speak.

While not a queer love story in the traditional sense, this tale of forbidden love sworn to overcome all obstacles is bound to read as familiar territory to queer folks. And there’s a smattering of guy-on-guy and girl-on-girl-on-guy sexuality to boot. For newcomers to the Kushiel’s Legacy series, the land of Terre d’Ange is a lusty one, where queer desire, polyamory, and BDSM are not merely accepted alongside heteronormative practices, but held sacred, as are all forms of sexuality.

Those easily squicked by sexuality infused with power play, domination and submission, and sado-masochistic play should be forewarned that the relationship between Imriel and his Princess Sidonie is charged with this energy. For those readers who find joy in such pleasures, this book and the others in this series are a rare delight. The writing is exquisite, and this particular story is of the swept-away-can’t-put-it-down-leave-me-alone-I’m-reading variety.

This is the third and final book in the trilogy about Prince Imriel, and the sixth book in the Kushiel’s Legacy series that began with the tale of Imriel’s fostermother, Phedre. While newcomers will find this tale a standout stand-alone, if this sounds like a book right up your alley, do yourself a favor and start from the beginning of the series with Kushiel’s Dart. As for this installment and its masterfully told story of love lost and found and lost and found again, color me hot and bothered.

What is speculative fiction?

I have a degree in literature but have never heard the term.

Enjoyed the saucy review even though I've never seen the book!

Speculative fiction is a

Speculative fiction is a sometimes controversial blanket term that covers fantasy/sci fi, horror, historical fiction/alternate history and a partridge in a pear tree.

And on account of this series, Jacqueline Carey is really my favorite author. Kind of ever.

Is she your favorite only in this genre or favorite of all?

Definitely in this genre and

Definitely in this genre and probably my favorite above all, too. This series is a combination of everything I could ever ask for in a bunch of books: wonderfully realized characters who you can't help but root for and love, sweepingly epic adventure, plot twists that spin your head around like the Exorcist, magic and mayhem, monsters, and lots and lots of pervie sexiness that's not just wonderfully written, but completely appropriate to the storyline. Like I said, these books aren't for everybody, but man... I'm a believer.  :)

Sounds like I need to read some Carey.

I love magic and monsters...but not mayhem so much.

Nope. Just missing my girl. Lots and lots!

We "tandem" read this one side by side on my birthday. We have geek love.

So sorry,

I was afraid of that - but then, to bring you out of the depths of your doldrums, you've got "phone love", "email love", and "text love" 'til the next time you see her!!!! I wonder if that's the real reason why Alex G Bell invented the phone? Until tonight...........

How romantic is that? I love it when someone reads to me!

Oh yeah, wish me a happy birthday - it was yesterday!

Nothing but love

Ha ha

Happy belated birthday, Tex!  Yay Cancers!

Actually, she bought us separate copies as a bday present to me, and we more or less competed obnoxiously to stay just ahead of each other in the storyline. (This is pretty much both of our favorite series. Ever.) That way we could gasp portentiously and shoot each other looks like, "Just WAIT until you get to this part!"

Yeah. We're nerds. I heart it. Did I mention that T is moving here this fall? No more missage. My favorite!

No more missage....

...that's fantastic - absolutely fantastic!

Nothing but love

Guess what? I found the first chapter of Kushiel's Mercy (also chapters from others in the series) off of the author's website:
